This spring Spacex will present The Tourist, the first UK solo show by London based artist Tim Ellis. The exhibition will include a series of new paintings and sculptures that respond to each main space within the gallery.

The exhibition was conceived as a journeyman’s view over three gallery spaces. The first room features a figure as a prompt or signifier for the show leading into an installation housing a variety of shelving structures, screens and tables to juxtapose symbolic objects and artefacts.

The final space will contain monuments displayed next to large draped banners. These draw inspiration from graphic tourist posters from the 1930’s, and will act as landscapes for sculptures to sit in. This space will be seen as a construct of the second manifesting itself in a mixture of totemic assemblages.

Ellis continually explores the idea that every object, whether in isolation or as a collection is dependent on a creator, mediator and audience, and as a consequence inherits their aspirations, values and intentions.

The Tourist seeks to explore the way cultural objects and symbols can be consumed. The title refers to a way of positioning the viewer when navigating the work. This position being one of a tourist, exploring a wide variety of opposing objects and ideas in such a way that removes their original intention or what they commonly represent. This shift in value offers the opportunity to question their purpose and meaning within a new or altered context.

With perceptions of cultural sentiment and social significance addressed, the viewer will be invited to engage with notions of symbolism, artefact and artifice.

Landings: re-viewing the world includes works by three artists that use animation techniques to offer new perspectives on the world we live in.

13 by Simon Faithfull (UK) portrays a melancholy journey through a strangely dissolving and pixelated landscape. Created from PalmPilot drawings made while walking along the A13 trunk road, the film presents the journey in the mind of a dog as it sniffs its way back to Barking.

Inger Lise Hansen (UK/Norway) presents a trilogy. Travelling Fields (2010) includes architectural elements and different ground surfaces in the Murmansk region, Kola Peninsula, Russia. Parallax (2009), shot on the rooftop of a department store in Linz, Austria, celebrates the supremacy of the machine over the human gaze, as did Michael Snow’s La région centrale (1971) in a more complex way. Proximity (2006), shot on a beach in North Jutland, Norway, depicts a mysterious and disorienting space in accelerated time. In all her works an upside down time lapse camera is moved, frame by frame, on a track inverting the ground and the sky.

Without You (2008) by Tal Rosner (UK/Israel) is inspired by a poem by Josef Albers. The film is a visual exploration of London’s industrial suburbia. Focusing on an imaginary circle drawn at a ten mile radius from Charing Cross, the natural and manmade environments lie side by side in harmonic indifference.

During the exhibition a special screening night will be held offering a varied programme of experimental animated films that deal with adult subjects. The night will consist of the works of 12 artists, including Andrew Kötting, Tim Macmillian, Chris Shepherd and David Shrigley, Sarah Cox and Roz Mortimer.

A solo exhibition by Paul Rooney, the 2008 recipient of the Northern Art Prize. The show centres round a major new film work, ‘Bellevue’.

Bellevue is an intricate, audacious work, shot on location at Harewood House, Leeds. It is based upon Malcolm Lowry’s short story ‘Lunar Caustic’, whose flights of fancy emanate from inside the walls of a 1930s New York psychiatric hospital. Against the idealised backdrop of a picture-perfect English country house, the work depicts an advertising agency focus group discussing the use of Lowry’s writing in a campaign. Bellevue subjects ‘reality’ to various levels of scrutiny; highlighting the potential for imaginative projection, and creative confusion, engendered by the written word.

The exhibition also includes several other new works. ‘Letters that Rot’, 2010, the two screen video work ‘Small Talk’, also 2010, and the sound work ‘Words and Silence’, 2008.

Bellevue is co-commissioned by Film and Video Umbrella Ordering viagra pills with the Bluecoat, Liverpool in association with Harewood House, Leeds and Spacex, Exeter.

This exhibition brings together the most compelling underwater inspired artworks of the past decade, including painting, sculpture, photography and video works by ten international artists.

Bill Viola presents a mesmerising video where two lovers intertwine as they slowly descend into dark waters. A drawing by Ellen Gallagher conjectures a monstrous creature evolved in the far depths.

Straight from the pages of Jules Verne – a motorised model submarine by Cut and Scrape lurches about in the clutches of a giant squid. More abstractly, Shirley Kaneda’s paintings are concerned with the state of liquidity – her precise yet free squiggles are a play on refraction and reflection.

Internationally renowned Dutch artist and engineer Theo Jansen has been developing mechanical, skeletal like sculptures for the last 20 years. Jansen has named these creations strandbeests, which translates as beach animals. The strandbeests are self-propelling engineered creatures which are powered by the wind.

Spacex has co-produced this project for which the artist is creating a major new work, a Siamese twin version of his last work, named Ventosa Siamesis. Each of the twins will be approximately 10 metres long and, under the guidance of the artist, this enormous creature will explore Exmouth beach from 25–27 June, before arriving in Exeter city centre, to coincide with Exeter Summer Festival from 2–4 July.

In addition Spacex is showcasing the first UK exhibition of the artist’s work at the gallery from 15 May–3 July 2010.

This winter Spacex will present a solo exhibition by London based British filmmaker Emily Wardill, one of the UK’s most exciting young artists, described by the Guardian as unafraid to ‘put her viewers between a rock and a hard place’.

With her new work, Game Keepers Without Game, Wardill presents a powerful and contemporary feature length movie that tackles difficult social issues without compromise.

The formal structure of the film is based on Pedro Calderón de la Barca’s Life is a Dream (La Vida es Suena) that was written in the 17th Century. The script for Wardill’s new work translates the story into contemporary London; depicting a child banished from the family home at an early age.

The work, which is set to a complex drumming sound track, comprises of still shots of objects that become characters; and a mixture of acted scenes where nothing and nobody touches.

Following its premiere at Spacex this new work will be screened at The Showroom, London. It will also be included in a major solo show at de appel, Amsterdam and at MOCA in Miami in December 2009.

Spacex is pleased to present the first solo exhibition in the UK by Australian artist Shaun Gladwell.

Shaun Gladwell critically and poetically links personal experience with contemporary culture and historical references through performance, video, painting, photography and sculpture. His works engage these concerns through forms of urban expression such as skateboarding, hip-hop, graffiti, BMX bike riding, break-dancing and most recently, extreme sports.

‘Seven Year Linework’ presents a selection of projects that are drawn from Gladwell’s ongoing investigations of conceptual drawings rendered in video. Beginning with one of Gladwell’s earliest experiments in video, the exhibition includes a series of recorded performances from different points of view. Gladwell’s use of slow motion has become a trademark of the artist’s aesthetic style, however the video projects in this exhibition regard a sense of slowed motion in real time footage.

Gladwell has recently presented new work at the 2009 Venice Biennale in the Australian Pavilion. This exhibition is curated by Tania Doropoulos.
