As part of our ongoing research into social practice, Spacex held a series of peer-to-peer workshops in Autumn /Winter 2012 to address some of the inherent challenges within this expanding field. The workshops opened up a space to share experience, engage in peer critique and reflect critically on where theory meets practice when artists develop collaborative or participatory projects. Each session was led by a UK based practitioner with extensive experience of working with social practice; Emma Smith, Lotte Juul Petersen, Nuno Sacramento, Sophie Hope and Emily Druiff.

In order to disseminate the discussions, a small publication is planned for 2013. For further information, or if you are interested in receiving a copy please contact Where can i buy strattera online

Spacex and Exeter College co-hosted a programme for students to work with a practising artist, exploring digital media as art practice. Students from the A2 Film and Video course at Exeter College worked with artist Katy Connor and the exhibition Salvatore Arancio: An Arrangement of the Materials Ejected. The students developed their own creative responses to the exhibition using film, animation and other digital formats. The work produced by students was screened in the gallery space for a one off event and can be viewed on this page.

Katy Connor is an established artist working with digital media, new technologies and scientific processes. Coming from a professional background in film and television production, she has been developing her artistic practice since 2004. She is an associate artist with iDat, Plymouth and has exhibited throughout the UK and Europe. Her recent exhibition at Plymouth Arts Centre, Pure Flow, visualises the signals generated by data networks such as 3G and WiFi, allowing visitors to interact with the work to create their own live data compositions.

For my response piece I set out to investigate the extent to which sound intensifies a subject. When I was in the planning process I thought of things I could film that were initially quite reserved. I then looked at how Salvatore uses sound in his piece ‘Everything Keeps Dissolving’, he shows us a static image and then uses sound to change the image, this mimics altered states. I chose to shoot a stream, I thought this linked in with Salvatore’s interest in the elements and also was quite a neutral image that could be changed with sound. I then used sound synthesis and atmospheric samples to create a strong, intense soundtrack that would change the mood of my images.

For my recorded video, I chose to explore the idea of conflict between the human mind and nature. I cover the ideas of worship, admiration and destruction.
By making my actress faceless, I’m attempting to show mankind as a whole instead of a singular mind or body. Not only is it symbolic, it also adds an eery feeling to my film.
0:42 seconds into my short film, is my favourite shot. My actress is stood in the centre of a full body shot in a shrubbery bed, with the city in the background. I felt this shot was particularly special as it was combining two opposites and exploiting them to the audience.
The shot at 0:50 is pretty shakey, and the zoom in focuses on a different area to what I was aiming for, but despite this I felt the shaking camera added to the distortion in the film and enhancing the creepy feeling I was glad to acheive.
To conclude, I was impressed and proud of my finished project, it took two days to film. Half of it in my home town, the other half in the nearest city. Many thanks to my actress, and a few of my friends that threw in suggestions for camera shots. I appreciate your help.

For this video (at first) I was inspired by Salvatore’s mandrake – basically, going along the lines of it being a hallucinogenic (so, in a nutshell, my idea was to create a hallucination). Over times, however, I decided to dig a little deeper – Salvatore follows subjects like reality being compared with fantasy, so I decided to warp reality (which is basically the same as fantasy, right?). So that’s how I came to final idea.

Where Arancio collates images from different era into a spatial static format, my animation works on a linear basis whereby the viewer is given time to consider and compare each image in a natural fashion, a parallel to the natural schema throughout the images. The merging of materialist symbols such as the barcode with the more ‘usual’ nature of the tree trunk and the contour lines, I intend to bring Arancio’s work into the modern day. Unlike his deliberate absence of humans and focus on the power of nature, I consider the materialism and capitalism of society to be a decisive factor in all of our lives, in essence, it has become part of our nature. The climatic (And vague) image of the golf course at the end of the piece culminates the themes of the film with the ironically leisurely interaction between man and nature on the golf course, a type of landscape and nature that has been engineered by man for man’s entertainment.

The reason I responded like this is because he’s very into nature and puts weird and wacky soundtracks to some of his work, so I did the same when working in the style of him….

I wanted to pay homage to Arancios style, I particularly liked his photo etchings so used those as strong influence, I was also inspired by the fantasy surreal element. I reflected this through the metamorphosis nature of my piece. I would have liked to explore Arancios interest in mythology more in my film.

Folk Archive is a vibrant collection of contemporary folk art put together by artists Alan Kane and 2004 Turner Prize winner Jeremy Deller. Over the last five years Deller and Kane’s ongoing research has explored both traditional and contemporary forms of popular creative expression.

From body ornament to flower arranging, knitting to custom cars, Deller and Kane have documented this fantastic array of visual art through photography, film and objects, updating what is traditionally thought of as folk art. It includes incredible objects, films, painting, performance, costume, decoration, political opinion, humour, poetry and more from our own, often overlooked, doorstep. This exhibition shows how widespread contemporary folk art is and the central role it plays in the nature of a society and its art.

Folk Archive celebrates energetic and engaging creativity from a vast range of activities occurring throughout the UK including tar barrel rolling at Ottery St Mary. It features other material from the South West and a series of special events accompany the show.

Universalism at Stake presents work by twelve international contemporary artists, which developed out of a series of residencies in Senegal in 2004, organised by Face à Face, Paris, and curated by Marie-Thérèse Champesme. The installations, drawings, videos and photographs that make up Universalism at Stake are presented in the UK by SPACEX as part of Africa ‘05.

More Info

The overall theme of the project was to respond to the question of ‘universalism’ as set out by the late Léopold Senghor, the distinguished poet and President of Senegalese independence, member of the UN Human Rights Commission and founder of the African Human Rights Charter.

Artists were invited from around the world (Senegal, Gabon, Mozambique, France, Albania, USA, Brazil, Haiti, Palestine, La Réunion) to work together for a period of weeks in Joal-Fadiouth, Senghor’s birthplace and one of the first European trading posts in West Africa.

The result is a series of fascinating reflections upon questions of universalism and intercultural relations, marked by the personal history of each artist and inspired by the reading of Senghor’s texts.

While c19th plant gatherers followed the trade routes that grew up with the expanding British Empire, nurseries were busy hybridizing and improving their discoveries, acclimatizing new varieties to the British conditions. The contemporary legacy of this process of conquest and acquisition lives on in the form of the so-called ‘English’ garden, with its enormous variety of plants from around the world.

2004 has been designated the ‘Year of the Garden’ in the UK (marking the 200th anniversary of the Royal Horticultural Society), at a time when gardening has become enormously popular, yet there has been little reflection on the power mechanisms which brought the English garden, as we know it today, into being.
