After visiting Spacex to see the exhibition Hortus: botany and empire the participants began to design work in response to the exhibition, looking at traditional Islamic patterns and the use of flowers in embroidery. Craft teachers Frances Holden and Lynn Bennett ran weekly sessions at the Islamic Centre, concentrating on design and practical skills.
Alongside the needlework sessions, participants took part in a series of workshops led by contemporary artist Gail Burton, who exhibited at Spacex in 2004. In these workshops Gail led the group in an exploration of the boundaries between sewing and drawing. The project was funded through Spacex by the National Lottery’s Awards for All scheme.
